Group Topic Ideas

In thinking of ways to generate conversations on the groups and group blog I maintain, I’ve been thinking of topics that might get an opinion out of people. As I am going back to school very soon, Self Education is certainly going to be getting a good deal more attention than it has in the past. I’m hoping that it will grow as a place where people can discuss different methods of education as well as have interesting discussions about the various academic subjects out there.

With TR2070-DAFT, I’m going to test the waters of the more inclusive policy I set in place a few months ago by inviting people who are fans of other genres into the group. It’s my hope that it will help foster conversations and generate new ideas.

….Lunatic Fringe…. in being the only one among the things I moderate which is signifigantly different, in that it’s a group blog rather than an e-mail list, is a bit more difficult to figure out. In finding topics, I’d have to not only figure out what would get the current members posting but also figure out which topics would generate enough interest in the group that others will be interested in joining.

One Human Tribe, it seems to be growing…slowly. Now that there are a few more members, I’m going to start encouraging people to introduce themselves in addition to running topics. I won’t be posting the PGRDF or anything like that (though I won’t refuse peoples right to use it) but I might do a short survey which will be sent along with the welcoming message for new members to fill out. I will also be posting here a bit more rather than leaving it to the hope that people will post themselves and generate discussion.

I will be doing this next Saturday as that’s now my only free day until late December.

Age Confirmation E-mails

While it pains me to do so, I’ve been turning away quite a few new members from One Human Tribe and mainly for an otherwise trivial reason. As is indicated on the membership page of the groups, a response to a particular e-mail is required in order to obtain membership to the group. Without the Age Confirmation e-mail, memberships are automatically rejected whether otherwise valid or not.

My reasons for this are simple:

1. This is an Adult list and checking the age of every single member is of paramount importance to me to ensure that someone underage does not float in either accidentally or on purpose. I can’t control the misleading statements of some people but I can at least put that rule right up front to ensure that the general policy is known by even outsiders.

2. I hate Spambots. It is nearly impossible for the Spambots to get past this method of joining. Even if they can get past Yahoo! prevention protocols, they rarely get past mine. I do this to ensure that every member has a free and clear list to feel comfortable in without the fear of annoying e-mails.

So, if you’re considering joining or you’re currently a member and thinking of asking a friend, please remember the seperate e-mail that must be responded to in order to join our list.

Sincerely,
The Moderator
